How to Prepare Your Driver’s License for Driving in Japan

Japan has specific legal requirements for foreign visitors who wish to drive. Please check carefully which document applies to your country before making a reservation.

1. Check if Your International Driving Permit (IDP) Is Valid in Japan

Japan recognizes only International Driving Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention are not valid in Japan.

You must carry both:

  • Your original driver’s license
  • Your International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva format)

2. Countries That Require an Official Japanese Translation Instead of an IDP

If your license was issued in one of the following countries or regions, an IDP is not accepted. You must obtain an official Japanese translation of your license.

  • Germany
  • France
  • Switzerland
  • Belgium
  • Monaco
  • Taiwan

The translation must be issued by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) or an officially designated organization.

3. Important Notes

  • Driving is permitted for up to one year from the date of entry into Japan.
  • You must always carry your passport while driving.
  • Failure to present the correct documents may result in denial of vehicle handover.
